You Know You're in England When...

...you go to a pub called Ye Olde King and Queen. And it's an old Tudor-style building. And it has fantastically fun karaoke on Tuesday nights. Haha, this pub was amazing, definitely a favorite (especially because of the karaoke). It's this huge place that is decked out in all this stereotypically English way...round tables with high backed chairs, suits of armors hanging around the place, giant television screens broadcasting football matches. Truly amazing. Also, according to my web research, it has the longest bar in all of the UK. I don't know if this statement is true, but it was indeed very long. I think if a bar in the US tried to be done in this style, it would just be kind of campy and silly but since this is England and the original building was built in the 1770s, they can get away with it.

When Laura and I were walking back to the bus stop (the others had decided to go to a club afterwards, but we were tired and wanted to head back), we were talking about how every once in a while, you have to remind yourself that you actually are in England. Take out a map, point to Great Britain and say "you are here". I've only been here 2 weeks but it feels like so much longer. And it doesn't really feel much like a foreign country. Sometime's I'll leave my window open for fresh air and I can hear people walking outside. I'll hear someone with a non-British accent say something and it'll be weird because I'm not used to hearing that. Obviously on my floor it's different because most of us are Americans, but once I leave my dorm, I really expect the British accent to be around. But yes, I am in England. And in England there are amazing pubs with round tables and suits of armor and karaoke.

Ye Olde King and Queen!

Not the best picture of the outside, mostly because it's hard to take a picture of a building when you are right outside of it, but still, you get the point.I tried to capture the greatness of this place, but I don't think I succeeded. Well, you can see how big it is. There you go.
